Holy stinkin muscles Batman!

I don't see what the appeal is to over muscular horses that look like Body Builder Joe at the local gym. Now, I've never shown in regular halter classes. I've done performance halter where the horse's aren't as meaty and don't look overstuffed. I like looking at a horse and thinking, "Hey, that horse can actually walk!" This just does not appeal to me and I'll be honest, I love the buckskins, grays, palominos, roans, and grullas. Color is the first thing I see when I look at a horse and as I get closer then comes the,"Oh crap- this is wrong!". But that wasn't the first thing I noticed on this guy- I think my brain even flinched.

My first thought was that I had to play Wheres Waldo with his head. He's not my taste in horse even with his pretty buckskin color. His front legs look base wide and I can't see the hooves very well, but from what I do see, it almost looks as though he toe's out. Now I looked a little more for this horse and found his Equine.com stallion at stud ad. And I was right, he does toe out. http://www.equine.com/stallions-at-stud/stallion-ad-710496.aspx?search_id=e79e4a1c-a621-43e8-bc63-972ef0268aa0 And his pasterns look a bit straight. I was a bit disappointed looking at this horse since I saw his pedigree, age, color and performance history first. He has his AQHA ROM- and it kind of makes me wonder what the other horse's competing looked like. I'm hoping that the judges were as mystified in his huge body and small head like me and just didn't bother looking down at the legs.

wow his head looks like a pin prick and what on earth is up with his front legs, it looks like they're breaking under the weight!

It is a bit much, but I would hope that if this horse wasn't fitted up for halter, he'd look MUCH better. Hopefully not as bulky. I know a lot of halter horses, when left to...erm...deflate, look so much more normal.

Either way...I feel bad for them when they are in this condition. I wouldn't mind the muscle quite as much if the horse was at least built correctly...but then again, if it was built correctly, you wouldn't need all the muscle to try to "hide" the flaws!

EXACTLY what i was thinking. if he was a bit underweight, we would see him sitting in a paddocka nd think what a mediocre horse with so so conformation, but by muscling him up, is he HYPP Positive? they hide every defect!

Wow those are some crooked front legs. He looks pig eyed to me, but perhaps because of his mass... A little goose rumped, or I think so. He does have a nice shoulder and a short back.

Nope Hannah, surprisingly enough he's HYPP NN. On his equine.com ad they have a photo of him at a lope and he looked much smaller as if they let him slim down and be a horse.
I guess I'm just one who will never understand they hype of having a massive muscle machine in my pasture. And once you actually focus in on this stallions face, it's cute. He's got a cute little baby doll head on an awkward body.

yeah if it was on a welsh his head would be awesome!

Ha, deflate, that's funny!

I don't understand how halter horses got to be this way. They aren't functional. I guess it's kind of like the human body builders...people like looking at the muscles because it's interesting to see things pushed to the extreme but the functionality isn't there because they have zero stamina. I mean, I wouldn't really be scared to meet a guy like that in a dark alley because I could outrun him in about 10 feet. He'd cramp up and be on the ground before we got out of the alley! I imagine those horses are the same way, which makes me sad. What's the point of a horse if it can't do anything but look pretty? Well, I guess if you have a lot of money then it has a point but I would guess that most of us don't have the luxury to keep horses around just to stand around and admire them.

Yuck..human body builders creep me out, so it's only natural that the horsey body builders creep me out too, lol.

Feed um and lead um.....about all they are worth....I know very little halter Stallions that can actually ride worth a darn......I totally a performance Halter person and Have to Congratulate AQHA for getting some balls and opening up this class....Hopefully we can get away from these "Moose" yype of horses.....Yes he does have a pretty head but looks like a freak from there.....Talk about showing a Blind eye to legs.....GWAD! what a mess those are.

Banner......LMAO!! had a good chuckle over that one!

ok so now if i meet a body builder in a dark alley, i won't panic....because it's happened too me a lot and i've always just stood still and they seem to not be able to see you anything standing still, they are aggravated by movement...but now i know....

Hahahahahahahaha........funny!!!

What the age of specialization will get you...muscle bound horses that cannot move.

a friend of mine bought an Impressive bred halter horse. She said he was really huge and they actually had him wrapped from head to toe. All you could see was around his eyes, his ears poking out and his muzzle. The rest of him was covered in a white cotton batting.
They told her he was kept in his stall 24/7 except when they worked him in the arena.
How sad a life.

anyhow..for this guy..DAMN he's just an Arnold! (back in the T-2 days) Itty bitty head and a neck as big a'round as a tree trunk!

Hate to say it but he kinda reminds me of my mare. She's toed out though (lack of care as a foal/weanling).
I blew up the pic so you can see it better

Hannah....ya killin' me girl! *laughing*

no this is serious, body builders are prevalent in my area and they often roam the same dark alleys as me....this is good stuff to know

Ok Hannah, this is what you do....
I know you watch Rugby being a roo that you are. (Hate to tell ya but the All Blacks are my absolute fave)
Well ya know how they have that ball and get down low and jig left then right?
Do that. When you jig left and he tries to go that way, jig right.
He's gonna fall over! Top heavy!
Then he's an alley speedbump.

Bucky, your mare so reminds me of the old bulldog type QH's and bless her heart I still have a sort spot for her type......Not like the Halter horses of today but when I was first in the biz like 30 yrs ago.....I absolutely love her! Ill try not and contradict myself her.....but shes cute!

Well thanks FL!
She is a king bred (King Hankins) mare so you know she's all work and no play! She'll go all day and not bat an eye or complain as long as you rub the sand out from her udder (her love spot!).
She didn't have a farrier look at her feet til it was too late. Toed in permanently.
All heart this girl. Bulldog for sure! I love this type of build.
So happy you don't think she has that nasty halter type build. Whew!

omg the good old crab walk...these are all GREAT ideas, i'm never going to get (whatever body builders do to people in dark alleys) ever again!

His front right looks wonky to me but it may be the angle of the leg too.

I personally don't like a horse that is over muscled. I like to see a traditional looking Qh in the ring. But we humans are sick people and have to makes things look like cartoon caricatures to win ribbons.

I am wondering if they gave him myostatin blockers. As far as I know they can not even be tested for yet since they are technically not a steriod. They only block the gene that limits muscle mass.

Have very many of you ever watched a halter class, like in the past 20 years? This horse is a freaking weenie compared to some of the hulks out there. Compare him to Kids Classic Style, and that type of horse - he's not half the mass.

Actually, I like his short cannon bones, his stifle and gaskins, and his pretty head. All his parts go together, and he's balanced. He has symmetry. If he toes out a bit, well, it isn't enough to make me think he'd be unsound. And I'm willing to bet there isn't a handful of you that have head in your collective barns that can beat his. Jealous, much?

Color him black, call him Poco Buneo, and tell me he's too big to move. Or, color him gray, call him Playgun, and tell me his bulk will kill any expression of athleticism. Color him bay, call him West Coast Whiz, and be sure to get a gelding party together. (Not.) Color him palomino, call him Mr Yella Fella, and tell me that SOB can't move (he sure as hell can).

There isn't anything about his build that absolutely indicates he can't move. There are plenty of other horses built a lot like him, and some of them have sired over a million dollars in performance winners (beefcakes Playgun and West Coast Whiz among them). These are chunky, wide, heavily muscled athletes.

Are you guys blind, stupid, or just all menopausal?

I don't like his legs, and I think that in a class that puts conformation first, ANY deviation from correct for the legs should be disqualified.

However, I do agree--he's not REALLY that muscled, when you compare him to some of the others.

Hey Anonymous:

I didn't say he was the biggest halter I've seen. Alot of us didn't say he was 'omg he's huge!'
Most of us said "where the hell is his head?"

He's built like the traditional bull dog ranch horses (Like my mare) but with his small feet, and huge body, he aint good for nuttin' BUT halter.

It's kinda like getting the point across as "you don't need to beef them up to make them look good people!"

very nice to have your anonymous input though. Always good to have other opinions shared in an adult like manner.
Thank you

Hey just found your blog. I actually wanted to comment on Klassy Celebri Te, he is MUCH better looking in person. I was able to see this stallion a couple years back. He is not as big as he looks in the pictures. However he is VERY temperamental!! He was not a gentlemen when I met him!! Very pushy, aggressive, and dominant!! (Please don't rag on me for putting my 2 cents in. It is just the pictures don't do this stallion justice really.)
